The Volunteer’s Role

If you are passionate about helping organizations in Institutional capacity development and enhancing organizational contribution in Gender and Social Development, this is the role for you.

As a Gender and Social Development Advisor, you will be working with Global Green Growth Institute, GGGI based in the African Union along with their team in Addis Ababa Ethiopia in leading and formulating partnerships and networks to achieve and disseminate results.

In this role, you will support GGGI Ethiopia, moving into a period of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, there is now an opportunity to reset traditional approaches to economic development and shift towards greener, more sustainable initiatives. To guide this shift across the African continent, the African Union developed the Green Recovery Action Plan (GRAP) which provides a framework for sustainable economic recovery from the pandemic.

The ultimate outcome of the Project is an enhanced impact on the economic and climate resilience of the African population, in particular women and youth, post-COVID-19. This will be achieved through progress in three intermediate outcomes:

  • Strengthening the African Union’s Commission (AUC’s) ability to implement the GRAP
  • Enhancing skills of national and regional policymakers to develop inclusive green growth policies, plans and programs in alignment with their nationally determined contributions and climate change strategies
  • Improving the ability for governments and partners to access climate finance for Africa’s green recovery, aimed in particular at initiatives that support women and youth

  • As a volunteer, you will:

    • Lead the development, review and implementation of GADA’s communication strategy and operating plan aligned with GADA’s organizational priorities for outreach and impact.
    • Train GADA staff on basic media engagement strategies, and social media postings that protect the image and brand of GADA
    • Write and distribute high-quality content to promote GADA’s brand including website, social media, blog posts, storytelling, documentary, photography and media engagements.
    • Assist the Programmes unit in proofreading/editing reports for brand content in line with management policies and guidance and relevant donor requirements.
    • Perform any other duties and tasks, which are commensurate with the responsibilities and level of the post.


    Essential Requirements:

    • Degree or diploma in Gender Studies, Sociology/Anthropology/Social Development, International/ Development/Affairs, Public Policy, Economics, Human Rights or other social science preferably involving gender studies.


    Essential Background:

    • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in gender equality and social development of which 2 years at international level.
    • Substantial experience in the design, monitoring and evaluation of gender projects.
    • Experience working directly with one or more departments of multilateral or bilateral development institutions in developing countries is important.
    • Proven experience and expertise with environmental and social safeguards.
