Job Description

iDE is an international NGO with 40 years of experience in designing and delivering market-based solutions to poverty. iDE is headquartered in Denver, Colorado USA and operates in 11 countries around the world.

iDE is seeking applications from qualified candidates for a Market-Based Sanitation Technical Director to be based in Ethiopia for an anticipated USAID-funded program. This program aims to increase gender-inclusive and equitable access to improved sanitation and hygiene products by growing the nascent WASH private sector. The activity will increase the supply and demand for affordable, high-quality sanitation products and services; augment learning to bring innovations to scale; increase private-sector engagement with local authorities; and promote WASH enterprise growth. The Market-Based Sanitation Technical Director will be responsible for leading the technical and operational programmatic aspects of the program under the guidance of the Chief of Party.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead assessments of market penetration and availability of products related to improved sanitation and hygiene to inform program design
  • Identify a range of viable business models in the rural Ethiopian context to be promoted and scaled based on observed successes
  • Lead Human Centered Design efforts including conducting ethnographic research in diverse contexts to uncover insights and strategies for behavior change
  • Lead intensive workshops in some representative or strategic locations and support the scaling up of these efforts within the private and public sectors
  • Lead consumer segmentation activities including assessments of willingness to pay and identifying appropriate balances of product and/or financial services appropriate for each priority segment
  • Provide training and support to a range of entrepreneurs and businesses related to product selection, marketing, and more general business skills
  • Identify key barriers to local production of sanitation products and increase incentives/decrease risk to such production
  • Support the development of gender equitable product standards
  • Support improvement of the sanitation business environment and market through advising advocacy activities of the project
  • Provide updates on economic conditions and trends to inform programmatic adaptations
  • Draft technical reports and provide technical assistance to the CoP
  • Conduct periodic reviews to identify technical and operational gaps and make implementation recommendations

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in development economics, finance, international development or a relevant degree; or a bachelor’s degree in the same fields with 10 years applicable experience; Minimum of 5 years’ experience working on private sector development or entrepreneurship in energy, water, sanitation and/or health sectors;
  • Experience applying various innovation methodologies to projects (human-centered design, behavior change methodologies, behavioral economics, rapid prototyping and testing)
  • Demonstrated skills in building and maintaining relationships with host governments, donors, other donor-funded projects and stakeholders, local organizations, and partners.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent demonstrated interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Strong skills and experience in analyzing, synthesizing and coming up with digestible strategies and action plans based on action research.
  • Experience recruiting, developing, and managing local and international staff and teams.
  • Track record of strong commitment to sharing knowledge, documenting experiences, supporting creative initiatives, and sharing credit.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in Amharic and English.
